Homer Made Custom Drums is owned by husband and wife team, Homero Lavernia and Sandra Leatherman
As a child, Homero’s first drums were cardboard boxes which he banged on with a pair of drumsticks. At age 17, he bought his first real drum kit which he eventually tore apart to see how it was made. He experimented with customizing his drums to make them sound and look better. Throughout his career as a drummer, Homero received requests from fellow drummers to customize their drums. Homero finally realized that he liked to work on drums more than playing them.
Sandra is a professional artist with a degree in fine arts from the University of Florida. Her artistic eye and fine precision detail work produces stunning drum creations. Sandra picked up some drumsticks and started playing the drums during a medically rocky time of her life after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. She discovered that it helped relieve stress, and she joined Homero in his passion for drums.
Homero and Sandra honed their woodworking skills in the mountains of Colorado. They recognize the need to craft drum shells using unique combinations of wood to offer truly customized sound. They made drums in their home but soon ran out of workspace. They embarked on an ambitious plan to excavate a dirt crawlspace under their home. Over the span of six years, they dug by hand using shovels, pickaxes and 5-gallon buckets to move dirt and granite rock with the help of some family and friends. When their basement workshop was completed, they crafted exquisite handmade, custom drums full-time.
Homero and Sandra are determined to set a new standard for quality custom drums. They are master craftsmen who make their own shells, recognized in the drum industry for their superior sound and quality. Homer Made Custom Drums also donates towards reforestation as our continued commitment to sustainability.
